'Noggin Cup', Carved From A Birch Burl

£45.00

A belt cup or ‘noggin’ hand carved from a silver birch burl. These gnarly lumps, naturally formed on the trunk of a tree aren’t just pretty; they’re extremely practical. The swirly grain pattern makes them extremely strong and their lumpy shape is already nearly a cup, just needing to be scooped out! Historically, these burl cups had some trunk wood left attached to form a little handle. With the addition of a length of leather thong, they could hang from the belt, always on hand for sipping spring water or maybe something stronger.. This diminutive example would happily hold an espresso or a tot of rum! Hand carved, sealed with walnut oil, roasted in the oven and also has a leather loop with a hazel bead
