This folded birch bark box has been stitched together with split spruce roots and has a traditional stepped rim, also made from roots. The little spotty mushroom image has been carved into the multi-layered bark and highlighted with a tinted wax. Birch trees have a close relationship with the spotty Fly Agaric (Amanita muscaria) mushroom and are often found together, as they are here. The lid has been carved from spalted birch wood and has a hazel stick handle.
